How to remove bathroom mold in JVC villa myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It's been super humid lately and I think the exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What's the best way to handle this myself before it gets worse, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Bathroom mold in JVC villas is extremely common due to our high humidity and the condensation that forms when hot showers meet cooler surfaces. For a new, small patch, you can often manage it yourself.

Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective against many common household molds. For tougher stains, a paste of baking soda and water applied with a scrub brush can help. Always wear gloves and a mask during cleaning. After treating, ensure the area is completely dry. Critically, run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower to remove moisture. If the fan is weak or doesn't seem to pull air effectively, it may need servicing or replacement—this is a key long-term fix.

However, if the mold has spread significantly across a large area (generally more than one square meter), has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or has returned quickly after a thorough cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture issue. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent behind walls or in the ceiling void, which is common here. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and for planning the correct remediation strategy.
