How to remove bathroom mold in UAE villa shower?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in the corner of our master bathroom shower. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the tiles. What’s the best way to tackle this ourselves before it gets worse, and should we use a specific product available here in the UAE?

Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated anti-mold cleaner available at local hardware stores. For persistent growth, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective, but ensure the room is well-ventilated and you wear gloves and a mask. Thoroughly dry the area after cleaning with a towel and a fan to remove all moisture.

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, means bathrooms are prone to condensation. This moisture gets trapped behind tiles and in grout, fueling mold growth. To prevent recurrence, run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces. Improving air circulation is critical.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you suspect it has spread behind the tiles, a professional inspection is warranted. This is common in villas where a persistent moisture source, like a small leak in the plumbing behind the wall, may be the root cause. In such cases, surface cleaning is only a temporary fix. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess what's happening inside the wall cavity without causing unnecessary damage. For severe or recurring cases, remediation that addresses the hidden moisture source is the only permanent solution.
