How to remove black bathroom mold or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has started turning black, and I just noticed it's spreading behind the toilet. It's been really humid lately, and the ventilation in there isn't great. What's the most effective way to tackle this myself, and when should I just call in a professional service?

Black grout mold in a Dubai bathroom is almost always due to the high ambient humidity and poor ventilation, which creates a perfect environment for growth. For a small, surface-level area, you can tackle it yourself.
Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it generously onto the moldy grout and let it sit for at least an hour. The acidity kills most common household molds. For tougher stains, make a paste using baking soda and a small amount of water, apply it over the vinegar-treated area, and scrub gently with an old toothbrush. Always wear gloves and open a window or run the exhaust fan during the process. If the mold returns quickly, has spread behind walls (like the area behind your toilet), or covers more than a square foot, it indicates a deeper issue that surface cleaning won't fix. Persistent moisture within the wall or under the tiles requires professional assessment. In such cases, a certified mold inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and extent of contamination. A proper remediation service will contain the area, remove affected materials safely, and address the underlying humidity problem, which is critical for a long-term solution in our climate. |
