How to remove black mold and notify landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only spotted it today while doing a deep clean. The room is in a villa in Jumeirah and always feels a bit damp, especially since the weather turned humid a few weeks ago. What's the most effective way to get rid of it myself, and is this something I should notify my landlord about immediately?

Black mould behind storage in a humid Jumeirah villa closet is a common issue here, often caused by trapped moisture and poor air circulation. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for your surface). Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for an hour, then wipe it dry. Dispose of any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes.

Crucially, address the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from air conditioning or a small, unnoticed leak. Move storage boxes away from walls to improve airflow, ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce humidity swings, and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel in the closet. Run a fan in the room after cleaning to ensure it is completely dry.

You should notify your landlord immediately, as this is a habitability issue. Under Dubai rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property and addressing issues that affect its structural integrity or the health of tenants. Provide clear photos and a written description. The persistent damp feeling suggests a potential underlying issue they need to investigate, such as a leak in the external wall or faulty AC drainage. If the mould returns quickly after cleaning or covers a larger area, this indicates a hidden problem that requires a professional inspection to locate the moisture source accurately.
