How to remove black mold and prevent humidity in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It seems to have gotten worse since last month's heavy dew season. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and causing health issues. What's the most effective way to treat this myself and what can I do to stop the humidity from building up in there again?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by condensation forming on the cooler wall surface behind or around the AC unit's piping. The high outdoor humidity, especially during dew season, exacerbates this.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem. Dispose of any cleaning cloths immediately.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Ensure the closet is not overpacked to allow for air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar. A small, renewable desiccant dehumidifier (like silica gel packs) placed inside can help absorb excess moisture. The most effective solution is often to check that the AC is correctly sized and running efficiently for that room, as it is your primary dehumidifier.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor permeating your clothes, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is likely persistent. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any concealed condensation issues within the wall and to conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count and species.
