How to remove black mold and prevent it with a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha is pretty humid even with the AC running constantly. I just pulled out the sofa in the living room to find a load of black mold growing on the back of it and the wall behind. We've been dealing with unexplained allergies for months and I'm kicking myself for not checking sooner. What’s the best way to clean this and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially when items are placed against exterior walls where condensation forms. For a small patch (under one square meter), mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, or a diluted bleach solution (wear gloves and open windows), and scrub the area. However, since you've had ongoing health issues, the wall cavity may be affected, making professional inspection and remediation strongly advised to prevent spores from spreading.

The constant AC use can create cold spots that condense moisture, particularly in humid areas like Al Barsha. To prevent recurrence, you need to lower the room's relative humidity. Look for a desiccant dehumidifier, as they perform better than refrigerant models in the UAE's often high ambient temperatures. It should be appropriately sized for your living area; a unit with a 20-30 litre per day extraction capacity is a common starting point for villas.

After remediation, maintain indoor humidity below 60%, which is the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited. This often requires a dehumidifier to run periodically even with AC. Ensure furniture is not pushed directly against walls to allow for air circulation. A professional assessment can identify the moisture source, which could be a minor leak or insufficient insulation, and provide a targeted solution.
