How to remove black mold and stop moisture in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif. The last time we had that heavy dew a few weeks ago, the wall felt a bit damp. What’s the best way to clean this and, more importantly, how can I stop the moisture from getting in there in the first place?

That small patch in your closet is a classic sign of a condensation issue, very common in Mirdif villas due to the high humidity interacting with cool interior walls. The dampness you felt is the key; the mold is just the symptom.
For cleaning, wear a mask and gloves. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area gently, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe it dry. Never mix cleaning chemicals. The goal is to dry the area completely after cleaning. Stopping the moisture is the critical part. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat meets your cooled interior air, causing condensation. This is a building envelope issue. First, ensure the room's AC is running consistently to manage humidity; a dehumidifier can also help. Check that the closet isn't overcrowded, as tight-packed clothes restrict airflow and trap moisture. The most effective long-term solution is to address the wall itself. You may need to have the external wall inspected for cracks or compromised sealant that could be letting in humid air. In many cases, improving the insulation on that specific wall is the only permanent fix to prevent the surface from getting cold enough for condensation to form. If the mold returns quickly, spreads, or covers an area larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and assess the wall's condition. In the UAE climate, this type of recurring dampness often requires a building science approach to resolve permanently. |
