How to remove black mold and treat family's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in JLT. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, especially behind the toilet where it’s always a bit damp. I’ve started getting headaches myself after my showers. What’s the fastest and most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be taking them to a doctor for the coughs?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers. Your family's symptoms—coughing and headaches—are consistent with mold exposure, especially in enclosed, damp spaces. For persistent respiratory symptoms, a doctor's visit is advised to rule out other causes and receive appropriate treatment.
For immediate remediation, start by addressing the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functional and runs during and for 20-30 minutes after showers. Wipe down wet surfaces on walls and floors to reduce ambient moisture. To remove existing mold, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective for small surface patches. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear a mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. For mold behind the toilet, check for and repair any hidden leaks in the plumbing or wax ring seal, as this is a chronic moisture source. However, if the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the infestation may be within the walls or under tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and perform remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent cross-contamination. For long-term prevention, consider installing a dehumidifier or using moisture-absorbing products in the bathroom, as standard AC may not sufficiently control humidity in windowless wet rooms. |
