How to remove black mold behind bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the best way to tackle this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning company right away?

Based on the description of black speckles in the corner behind a wardrobe in a Jumeirah villa, you are very likely dealing with a mold colony, potentially Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or more commonly Cladosporium. The conditions you describe—high humidity, poor air circulation, and a cold wall from year-round AC use—create the perfect environment for mold growth in Dubai's climate.

For a small, localized area (under 10 square feet), you can attempt remediation yourself. However, caution is paramount. Begin by isolating the area and wearing appropriate PPE: an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe to allow the area to dry completely. A mixture of detergent and water can be used to scrub the mold off non-porous surfaces. For porous materials like drywall or plaster, the mold can penetrate deeply, making complete removal difficult and often necessitating the cutting out and replacement of the affected section.

It is critical to identify and rectify the source of moisture. In this case, it is almost certainly condensation caused by the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the external wall, exacerbated by the lack of airflow. Simply cleaning the mold without addressing this will result in its rapid return. Use a dehumidifier and improve ventilation behind the furniture.

For anything beyond a very small, superficial patch, or if you suspect the mold has spread into the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use specialized tools like moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the infestation hidden from view. Professional remediation ensures the mold is removed safely, following UAE health and safety guidelines, and that the underlying moisture issue is resolved to prevent recurrence.
