How to remove black mold behind furniture permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall facing the outside, and with all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in a professional right away?

Black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differential causing condensation. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, creating a perfect damp environment for mold.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it away with a disposable cloth. Discard the cloth immediately. After cleaning, let the wall dry completely.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. This wall may have inadequate insulation or a thermal bridge. Keep the wardrobe at least a few inches from the wall permanently. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to maintain humidity below 60%. Wiping down condensation from walls and windows regularly also helps.

If the mold returns quickly, covers an area larger than one square meter, or you detect a musty odor, the issue is beyond a surface concern. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden moisture within the wall cavity, which requires specialized remediation to resolve permanently.
