How to remove black mold behind toilet in JVC apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks but I finally found the source – a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet in my master bathroom in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be calling my building management first or just handling it myself?

Start by reporting it to your building management. Under Dubai regulations, they are responsible for fixing the root cause, which is often a hidden leak from plumbing or a faulty seal. The humidity spike you noticed accelerates growth, but a persistent moisture source is likely feeding it.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub thoroughly, dry the area completely, and increase ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan longer after showers.

However, black mould behind fixtures often indicates a larger, unseen problem within the wall. If the patch is large, keeps returning after cleaning, or you notice any wall softening, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters to find the leak's origin and recommend remediation. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the surface without addressing the hidden moisture will result in it coming back.
