How to remove black mold behind toilet myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where the wall meets the floor. It's been really humid lately and I think the bathroom's ventilation isn't strong enough. What's the best way to handle this myself before it gets worse?

Black mold behind a toilet is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely.

First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective on many common household molds and is less harsh than bleach. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Dry the area completely with a fan or hairdryer afterward—this is critical, as moisture is what allows it to return.

Since the mold is behind the toilet, check for a leaking wax seal or condensation from the tank, which are frequent moisture sources. Improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan longer after showers and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a musty smell spreading, it may indicate a deeper issue within the wall or under the flooring. At that point, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and lab identification of the mold species is recommended to assess the full extent and ensure it's properly remediated.
