How to remove black mold behind wardrobe in humid room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the interior wall that faces the building's corridor, and the room has felt more humid than usual since we cranked up the AC for the summer. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, and is this something I absolutely must report to my landlord in Dubai?

The black mold behind your wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially on interior walls where cold air from heavy AC use meets humid corridor air, creating condensation. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can tackle it yourself with proper safety precautions.

First, put on an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Move the wardrobe away to fully expose the area. The goal is to kill the mold and remove its food source—moisture. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is effective at killing most mold types and is less harsh than bleach. Do not mix it with other chemicals. Scrub the area thoroughly with a stiff brush, then wipe it clean with disposable cloths. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier in the room or ensure your AC is set to a lower humidity mode to dry the wall completely. This step is critical to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or the patch is larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species and the moisture source, which might be a hidden leak in the wall.

Under Dubai rental law (RERA), you are generally responsible for minor maintenance, but you must report any issue that could be structural or related to building defects, like a leaking pipe within the wall. Document the issue with photos and inform your landlord in writing; this creates a record and protects your security deposit. They are typically responsible for fixing the source of the problem if it’s not due to tenant negligence, such as poor ventilation.
