How to remove black mold from AC and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be constantly damp and I keep finding patches of black mold around the vent in my youngest son's bedroom. He's been having a persistent cough for the last few weeks that clears up when we spend the day out, and I'm worried the mold is the cause. What's the most effective way to clean the AC unit and the area to prevent it from coming back, and should I get a professional to look at it?

Black mold in AC vents is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. Your son's symptoms, especially improving when he's away from the room, strongly suggest the mold is an irritant. The most effective approach is a combination of cleaning and addressing the moisture source.

For the visible mold on the vent and surrounding wall, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water. Do not attempt to clean inside the AC unit or ductwork yourself, as this can aerosolize spores throughout your home.

Preventing its return requires reducing moisture. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged and the drip pan is functioning. Setting your AC to a slightly higher temperature, like 23-24°C, can reduce the amount of condensation it produces. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid periods, can help significantly.

Given the recurrent nature and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the entire system, including the internal evaporator coils and ducts, which are common reservoirs for mold growth that DIY cleaning cannot reach. A proper remediation will involve specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments. For verification, a post-remediation test can confirm the spore count in the room has returned to a normal level.
