How to remove black mold from bedroom ceiling ourselves?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It started after that period of heavy humidity last month, and now the room constantly smells damp no matter how much I run the AC. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves without having to call in a costly professional team right away?

Black mold in Dubai bedrooms is common due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The damp smell confirms an active moisture problem. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt removal yourself, but safety is critical.
Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the floor with plastic. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes surface color and can push spores deeper. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from aerosolizing, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area thoroughly. The key is fixing the source. In villas, this is often condensation from an AC vent directly above or a small roof leak exacerbated by humidity. Feel the ceiling for dampness. Ensure your AC is set to a low enough temperature to manage indoor humidity, ideally below 50%. Run a dehumidifier in the room for several days after cleaning. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or the damp smell persists, the issue is likely behind the wall or in the ceiling void. In these cases, DIY cleaning is a temporary fix. Professional inspection with a borescope can identify the hidden moisture source, which is necessary for a permanent solution. |
