How to remove black mold from bedroom closet in Dubai??« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall where our winter clothes are stored. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the lack of air circulation in there made it worse. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold in closets is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes or fabrics that show mold growth, as spores embed deeply.
However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or you notice a persistent musty smell, DIY cleaning often just addresses the surface. The hidden moisture source and root system within the wall remain. This is when a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters to find the source—often a hidden condensation line or external water seepage—and can perform air or swab tests to confirm the species and spore count. Dubai Municipality has guidelines for remediation in severe cases to prevent cross-contamination. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation by leaving closet doors ajar and using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage indoor humidity, which should ideally be kept below 60%. |
