How to remove black mold from bedroom wall ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves before we have to call in a professional?

Black mold on a bedroom wall in a Jumeirah villa is almost always due to a hidden moisture source, often condensation from an AC unit or a small, unseen leak. The high humidity here accelerates its growth. The most effective DIY approach requires addressing both the moisture and the mold itself.

First, identify and stop the moisture source. Check if the wall is cold to the touch from AC airflow; this causes condensation. Inspect the AC unit servicing that room for a clogged drain line or improper setting. Feel for dampness that might indicate a pipe leak within the wall. Without fixing this, the mold will return.

For removal, safety is critical. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and sealing it with plastic sheeting if possible to prevent spores from spreading. For a small patch (under one square meter), scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only lightens the color and doesn't kill the root structure on porous surfaces like drywall.

After scrubbing, a thorough drying is essential. Use fans and a dehumidifier for at least 24-48 hours. Then, apply a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

However, if the mold covers a large area (over one square meter), has a musty odor, or has returned after a previous cleaning, DIY methods are insufficient. The mold has likely penetrated deep into the wall material or the AC system. In these cases, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture source. They can perform lab tests to confirm the mold type and recommend a remediation plan that ensures it is properly contained and removed.
