how to remove black mold from closet and save clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. I'm really worried it's spread to our belongings and that the AC might be making it worse. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves and how can I tell if our clothes are ruined?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai villas, that wall likely has condensation from the AC's cold surface meeting our high outdoor humidity. Check for a leaking AC condensate drain pipe in that area, as that's a common culprit.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible patch with a microfibre cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour, not the mould, and can damage paint. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan immediately after cleaning.

For your clothes, don't throw them out. Mould on fabrics is often salvageable. Take them outside and brush off any visible mould growth. Then, wash them in the hottest water safe for the fabric with a quality detergent. Adding white vinegar to the wash cycle can help. Sun-drying is highly effective, as UV light is a natural disinfectant.

Because this is recurring and on an exterior wall, this indicates a persistent dampness problem that DIY cleaning won't fix. The mould you see is likely just the surface manifestation; the root cause inside the wall cavity could be more extensive. For a situation like this, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is advised to find the exact moisture entry point. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and confirm if the AC system is spreading spores, which is a common issue in our climate.
