How to remove black mold from closet and treat wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has a bunch of black fuzzy spots growing all over the leather bags and shoes I had stored in there. We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it after pulling everything out for cleaning. I'm worried it's spread to the walls behind the shelves.
What's the most effective way to clean this off my belongings and who should I call to properly treat the wall to make sure it doesn't come back?

The black fuzzy growth you've described is a classic case of surface mold, a common issue in Dubai villas due to our high humidity levels and continuous air conditioning use, which creates significant temperature differentials and condensation on cooler exterior walls.
For your contaminated belongings, immediate action is required. Leather items must be cleaned meticulously. Use a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water. Apply it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping the mold away. Never use bleach, as it can damage the leather. After cleaning, allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area before conditioning them. For non-porous items, a diluted detergent solution can be effective. Crucially, this surface growth is a symptom of a larger problem. The mold has almost certainly colonized the wall cavity behind the shelving. This requires professional remediation. The wall must be inspected with a borescope to assess the extent of growth within. The remediation process involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, safe removal of contaminated porous materials (like drywall or insulation), and thorough hygienization of the structure using EPA-approved biocides. Simply wiping the visible surface is a temporary fix; the root cause must be addressed. For a proper assessment and a permanent solution that complies with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards, I strongly recommend you call a certified professional.
