How to remove black mold from closet or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has been smelling a bit damp, and I finally pulled everything out to find a patch of black mold in the corner. We had that really heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and I think the moisture seeped in. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company for an inspection?

Based on the conditions you've described, this is a common issue in Dubai, particularly on external walls that experience significant thermal bridging and condensation from our high humidity and year-round AC usage. The heavy dew you mentioned provides the perfect moisture source for mold growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter (approximately 10 square feet), you can attempt a DIY remediation. First, ensure you have proper PPE: an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Isolate the area by sealing the closet off from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting. Scrub the affected surface with a solution of detergent and water, followed by a thorough wipe-down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). It is critical to address the moisture source. Clean the AC vent serving that room and ensure it is blowing cold air efficiently, as poor cooling can lead to condensation on cold walls.

However, if the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has a strong, musty odor, or if the drywall feels soft or crumbly (indicating potential water damage and deeper colonization), DIY is not advisable. UAE regulations and best practices recommend professional assessment and remediation for larger infestations to prevent cross-contamination and ensure occupant safety.

Given that the mold is on an external wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden condensation points and moisture meters to assess the wall's drying level. We can determine if the issue is superficial or requires more extensive intervention.
