How to remove black mold from curtains and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing on the back of our bedroom curtains in our villa in Jumeirah. I think the humidity from the AC unit right under the window is the cause, but I’m not sure. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the mold from coming back on our curtains and walls?

Black mold on curtains is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, particularly when an AC unit creates a cold surface that leads to condensation. For your children's safety, start by isolating the area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to prevent spore inhalation.
For cleaning, remove the curtains and take them outside. Do not attempt to clean them in-place, as this will aerosolize spores. A solution of white vinegar or a commercial mold remover can be effective for washable fabrics. For dry-clean-only curtains, professional cleaning is necessary, but you must inform them of the mold contamination first. The root cause is the humidity and condensation from your AC. The unit under the window is likely set too cold, or its condensate drain line may be partially blocked, causing excess moisture. Ensure the AC is set to a reasonable temperature (24-25°C is often recommended) to minimize the temperature differential. Have the AC unit serviced to check the drain pan and condensate line for blockages, as standing water is a primary moisture source. Improving air circulation in the room by keeping furniture away from vents and occasionally using a dehumidifier can also help reduce ambient humidity. Given the visible growth and your children's symptoms, the mold may be more widespread within the wall or AC system. For a comprehensive assessment, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and air quality testing is advised to identify all hidden sources and ensure the environment is safe. |
