How to remove black mold from Dubai villa closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been feeling really damp since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a Dubai villa closet, especially on an exterior wall, is almost always due to condensation from the high humidity interacting with cold surfaces, a common issue here. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely.

First, address the moisture source. This is critical. The wall is cold from year-round AC, and humid air is condensing on it. Improve air circulation in the closet—don't pack clothes tightly against the wall and consider leaving the door ajar. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help reduce the damp feeling.

For removal, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Never use bleach, as it can worsen indoor air quality and only bleaches the surface. Instead, scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover. After scrubbing, allow the area to dry completely.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity. In these cases, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the extent and identify any hidden problems. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the condensation points. For verifiable remediation, look for a company that provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the mold species and that it has been properly addressed.
