How to remove black mold from shower grout in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower in Jumeirah Village Circle. The room doesn’t have a window and the exhaust fan seems pretty weak. What's the most effective way to tackle this myself before it gets worse?

Start with a thorough scrub using a paste of baking soda and water or a dedicated grout cleaner. For persistent growth, a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water applied directly can be effective; let it sit for an hour before scrubbing and rinsing. Never mix vinegar with bleach, as it creates toxic fumes.

The core issue in your JVC bathroom is the lack of ventilation and constant humidity, which is typical in Dubai's climate. That weak exhaust fan is the main culprit. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider upgrading to a higher-capacity model. Wiping down the shower walls and squeegeeing excess water after use will also significantly reduce the moisture mold needs to grow.

If the mold is widespread, has penetrated deep into the grout, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be more established than it appears. In such cases, a professional inspection can determine if the moisture source is more serious, like a leak behind the tiles. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and, if needed, take samples for lab analysis to identify the species and advise on the correct remediation path.
