How to remove black mold from shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in the shower. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the ventilation fan in there has always been a bit weak. What's the best way to tackle this ourselves before it gets worse?

The black spots in your shower grout are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity levels, especially during summer. Weak ventilation traps moisture, creating an ideal environment for it to grow.
For a small, surface-level patch, you can tackle it yourself. A simple and effective DIY solution is a paste made from baking soda and white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water). Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during this process. Apply the paste or solution directly to the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a stiff-bristled brush. Thoroughly rinse the area with water and use a squeegee to remove all standing moisture after every shower. However, if the mold growth is extensive, has penetrated deep into the grout, or if you notice a persistent musty odor, this indicates a more serious moisture problem. Surface cleaning will not address the root cause. In such cases, and particularly in a villa where hidden structural damage is a risk, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and identify the source of the moisture intrusion. |
