How to remove black mold from shower sealant in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots creeping out from behind the silicone sealant around our shower. It's been super humid lately and the smell is really musty, especially in the morning. What's the most effective way to handle this myself, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Black mold on shower sealant is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially with year-round AC use creating condensation. The most effective DIY approach is a targeted application of undiluted white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution; spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. For persistent growth, a paste of baking soda and water can provide extra abrasion.
Thoroughly dry the area with a fan or dehumidifier after cleaning; moisture is the primary cause. If the mold has visibly penetrated behind the silicone or is recurring rapidly, the sealant itself is compromised. In that case, complete removal and replacement of the silicone is the only permanent solution, as the mold's root structure (hyphae) will be embedded deep within it. DIY methods are suitable for surface-level contamination. If the affected area is larger than one square meter, the musty smell persists after cleaning, or you or family members experience respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and lab testing to identify the mold species, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol for severe infestations. |
