How to remove black mold from sunless bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the corner of our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. The weird thing is, this wall is on the side of the house that gets zero sun. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's getting worse. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, or is it already too late and I need to call a professional company?

The black speckles you've described behind the wardrobe are a classic presentation of mold growth, a common issue in Dubai villas, particularly on interior walls with limited airflow and no sun exposure. The combination of high ambient humidity and year-round air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces like your north-facing wall. This moisture, trapped behind furniture, provides the perfect environment for mold spores to colonize.

For a small, localized area (less than 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach may be feasible. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe away to allow complete access. The goal is not to scrub the mold but to disinfect and remove it. A solution of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover is more effective than bleach, which often only removes the surface color and not the root structure. Gently wipe the area, ensuring you do not agitate the spores into the air. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely using a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given the wall's location and the persistent humidity, the moisture source is likely intrinsic, such as a minor plumbing leak within the wall or capillary rising damp from the foundation. Surface cleaning will be a temporary fix if the underlying cause is not identified and resolved. Furthermore, improper remediation can aerosolize toxic spores, spreading the contamination to your HVAC system and other parts of the house.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of water intrusion unseen to the naked eye. Our remediation protocols are in full compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines, ensuring the mold is contained, removed, and the air quality is restored.
