How to remove black mold from wall and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve spotted black mold spreading on the wall behind my clothes. I had the AC unit fixed last week, but I’m worried the mold will just come back. What’s the best way to clean this off the painted wall and what can I do to stop it for good?

Black mold on a wall from an AC leak requires addressing both the visible growth and the hidden moisture. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected painted wall with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Do not paint over it until the wall is completely dry and the mold is gone.

However, the leak likely caused moisture to seep into the wall cavity or insulation behind, which is the real problem. Simply fixing the AC unit and cleaning the surface will not stop it from returning if the wall itself remains damp. In Dubai's high humidity, this hidden moisture creates a perfect environment for rapid regrowth.

To prevent it permanently, the wall must be thoroughly dried. This often requires professional-grade dehumidifiers and moisture meters to confirm the structural materials are dry deep inside. For significant spreading or if there's a musty odor, a professional inspection is advised to assess hidden damage. They can use tools like thermal imaging to find moisture pockets and ensure the remediation addresses the root cause, not just the surface symptom.
