How to remove black mold from wall in humid room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and the AC in that room hasn't been feeling as cold. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good without having to call in a professional straight away?

Black mold spreading behind furniture in a humid room with a struggling AC is a very common issue in Dubai, especially during the more humid months. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely cold from the AC, and the trapped, stagnant air creates a perfect environment for condensation and mold growth.

First, address the source. The underperforming AC is a major red flag; it may not be dehumidifying the air properly, allowing moisture to accumulate. Have an HVAC technician assess its performance. Move the wardrobe away from the wall permanently to allow for air circulation; even a few inches can make a significant difference.

For removal, safety is paramount. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and opening a window if possible. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the area is larger than one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised. DIY attempts on larger infestations often spread spores and fail to address the root cause within the wall cavity.

After cleaning, the wall must be completely dry. Use a dehumidifier and fans for at least 24-48 hours. Monitor the area closely for any recurrence. If it returns quickly, the moisture source is still active, likely requiring a professional inspection to identify hidden leaks or condensation issues within the wall itself. In many Dubai villas, this scenario indicates a need for both mold remediation and an assessment of the building's insulation and ventilation.
