How to remove black mold from wardrobe in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black, fuzzy spots growing on the back wall of our walk-in wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been worse since the humidity spiked last week. What's the most effective way to handle this, and should I be calling a professional company or is it a DIY job?

The black, fuzzy spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation on cold exterior walls. Your wall is acting as a condensing surface, especially with the AC running constantly.

For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover. Dry the wall completely with a fan afterwards—moisture is the real enemy. However, if the mould has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wooden back of the wardrobe, removal and replacement of that section is the only effective solution.

Given the location on an exterior wall, this indicates a persistent condensation issue. Simply cleaning the surface mould will not stop it from returning. You must address the root cause by reducing humidity in the space. Use a dehumidifier or a desiccant like silica gel in the wardrobe. Ensure the room is well-ventilated when possible.

For recurring mould, areas larger than a square meter, or if occupants have respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent fix. In many cases, the wall cavity itself requires inspection. A proper remediation company, with its own microbiology lab for testing, can provide a protocol to resolve the issue and verify with post-cleanup testing that the environment is back to a healthy state.
