How to remove black mold from wardrobe without damaging belongings?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading on the back wall of our walk-in wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's behind all the clothes racks, and the room has started to smell really damp. What's the best way to handle this properly without ruining our belongings?

Black mould in a wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The damp smell confirms active growth, and the location behind clothes suggests a hidden moisture source, like a small plumbing leak or condensation from a cold wall.

First, move all belongings out of the wardrobe to a dry, well-ventilated area. For non-porous items, wipe them down with a damp cloth. For porous items like clothing, a hot wash will kill mould spores. Do not put items back until the source is fixed and the area is completely dry.

For the mould itself, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the affected wall area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't address the root cause. The goal is to physically remove the biofilm.

However, scrubbing visible mould is only a temporary fix. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many Jumeirah villas, this is often condensation forming on the cold back wall of a wardrobe that shares an exterior wall with an AC duct or an unconditioned space. Without addressing this, the mould will return.

For a recurring or large patch (over one square meter), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation point or leak. Remediation often involves improving insulation or ventilation to break the cycle of dampness. Proper remediation should always include post-clearance testing to verify the spore count in the air has returned to normal levels, ensuring your belongings remain safe when returned.
