How to remove black mold in bathroom and health risks?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled the wicker laundry hamper away from the corner and found a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall behind it. It’s been so humid lately, and I guess the lack of air circulation made it worse. What's the best way to get rid of it for good, and should I be worried about my family’s health from breathing this in?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers. The health risk depends on exposure level and individual sensitivity, but it can cause sinus congestion, throat irritation, and worsen asthma or allergies, especially in children.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach, as bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't kill the roots. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning.

However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or is widespread (covering more than a few square feet), professional remediation is necessary. The mold behind your hamper suggests a persistent moisture issue, likely from lack of ventilation. Simply cleaning the surface will not prevent it from returning.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and tiles. For severe humidity problems common in villas, a dehumidifier or improving your AC's ventilation in that room may be needed. A professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
