How to remove black mold in bedroom and health risks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and I think it’s made it worse. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be worried about my family’s health with it being in our bedroom?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially behind furniture where air circulation is poor, is a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. The health risk depends on the individual and the mold species. For most, it causes irritation like nasal congestion, coughing, or worsened allergy symptoms. Those with asthma or compromised immune systems can experience more severe reactions. The presence and spread indicate a moisture problem that needs to be addressed.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply cleaning the surface is often a temporary fix. The mold behind the wardrobe is likely due to condensation from the exterior wall or a small, unseen leak. Moving the furniture away from the wall to improve airflow is crucial. For a recurring or spreading patch, professional assessment is recommended to identify the moisture source. In villas, this can often be condensation from AC ducts running in the ceiling void above, a small roof leak, or capillary rising damp from the foundation. Remediation involves correcting the moisture issue first, then properly removing the contaminated materials. A lab test can identify the species, which helps assess the health risk and confirms the cleanup was effective. In many cases, the humidity from recent weather has exacerbated an existing, hidden problem. |
