How to remove black mold in closet or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to get rid of this myself, or should I call the building management first for something like this?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can often handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source.
However, since you mention it's on a wall and you're concerned it's spreading, the priority is identifying the moisture source. In many buildings, this is a condensation line from the AC unit dripping inside the wall or a leak from a pipe or adjacent bathroom. This is where building management should be involved. Under typical tenancy contracts and Dubai Municipality regulations, the owner or building management is responsible for fixing structural defects and leaks that originate from common areas or within the building's infrastructure. Call your building management first to report a suspected internal leak or condensation issue. They should send a technician to investigate the wall cavity. Attempting to remove the mold yourself without fixing the underlying water problem is only a temporary solution, and it will return. If the patch is large, has a strong musty odor, or you or family members are experiencing respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and species of mold present. |
