How to remove black mold in closet or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s gotten worse since last week’s humidity and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I just call a professional company right away?

That black patch appearing after a humid week is a classic sign of a moisture issue in Dubai's climate. The wall likely has condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid void behind it.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to manage it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the visible mould off the wall. Do not simply paint over it. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried. A fan directed at the corner can help. However, if the mould returns quickly, has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or if you notice a musty odour, the problem is likely more extensive behind the wall. In these cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the hidden damage and source, which is critical for a permanent solution. DIY cleaning often addresses only the surface, leaving the root cause intact. Given its location in a closet and the recent rapid growth, the moisture source could be an AC condensation line drip, a small plumbing leak in the wall, or severe interstitial condensation. A certified remediation company can identify this and properly contain the area during removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. The most effective approach is their combination of source identification, physical removal, and addressing the humidity that allowed it to grow. |
