How to remove black mold in Dubai closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It's behind some storage boxes and the wall feels damp. I'm really worried about it spreading. What's the best way to handle mold removal here in Dubai, and should I call a professional company or is this something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

Black mold behind damp closet walls in Jumeirah is a common issue due to our high humidity and year-round AC use, which can create condensation points. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt removal yourself, but the damp wall indicates a moisture source that must be addressed first.

Move all items away from the area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (check ACE for mold-specific cleaners). Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid oversaturating the wall. Let it dry completely with a fan; a dehumidifier is ideal. Discard any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes.

The critical step is identifying the moisture source. It's often condensation from an AC duct running inside the wall or a small leak. If the wall remains damp or the mold returns quickly, the problem is unresolved. DIY cleaning only addresses surface growth, not the root cause or potential hidden contamination inside the wall cavity.

For a recurring issue or if the area is larger than a square meter, a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact source. In many cases, the AC system itself requires inspection, as internal contamination can spread spores throughout the home. Proper remediation involves containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, which is difficult to achieve DIY. A company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the mold species to better assess any potential health risks, particularly important if household members have allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
