How to remove black mold in Dubai humidity myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity we’ve had lately in Dubai, it seems to be getting bigger. What’s the best way to get rid of this myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

A wall patch in an exterior-facing closet is a classic sign of condensation due to the temperature difference between your chilled room and Dubai's hot, humid air. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself.
First, address the moisture source. This is critical; without fixing this, the mold will return. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and not set so cold that it creates excessive condensation on cold surfaces. Use a moisture absorber or dehumidifier in the closet, and leave the door ajar to improve air circulation. For removal, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Never use bleach, as it can worsen indoor air quality and only bleaches the surface. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a strong musty odor, or returns after cleaning, you should get a professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold within wall cavities is common. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and borescopes, can identify the true extent and source. For this, a company with its own microbiology lab can provide a species identification and remediation plan, which is important for black mold due to its potential health risks. |
