How to remove black mold in Dubai villa ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month, and now my husband is waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

The black, fuzzy growth behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating cold surfaces. Your husband's stuffy nose is a typical reaction to mould spores in the air.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt remediation yourself. First, mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is often more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like drywall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution soak in for an hour, then wipe it dry. Immediately place the contaminated cloths in a sealed bag for disposal. The key is to address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, and use a dehumidifier or your AC's dry mode to keep the bedroom's humidity below 60%.

However, given its location behind furniture and the recurring humidity issue, the visible patch may only be a portion of the problem. Mould can penetrate deep into the wall. If the growth returns within a week, the wall cavity is likely affected.

For persistent or larger infestations, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to remove and replace the affected section of drywall and insulation to eradicate the hidden colony. A reputable Dubai-based firm with its own microbiology lab can provide definitive identification and post-remediation verification testing to ensure the air quality is safe.
