How to remove black mold in Dubai's humidity myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It must have been there for a while because the whole room has started to smell damp, especially in the mornings. What is the most effective way to handle mold removal here in Dubai's humidity, and should I call a professional company or is this something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

For a small patch (under one square foot) you can attempt removal yourself, but Dubai's high humidity makes controlling the moisture source critical. First, identify why it's damp. In a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or a small AC leak creating a cold surface where moisture condenses.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor with plastic. Use a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid oversaturating the drywall. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours using a dehumidifier or fan; this is non-negotiable in our climate. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after a previous cleaning, or if you smell a persistent damp odor, the issue is likely systemic. In villas, hidden moisture from a small leak in the roof or AC drainage can travel within walls. DIY cleaning only addresses surface growth, not the root cause. For a proper diagnosis and to prevent recurrence, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is needed to find the hidden water source. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. |
