How to remove black mold in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It’s been really humid lately and I think it might be from a small AC leak we had a few months back. What’s the best way to get rid of black mold here in Dubai, and should I be calling a professional company for this?

Black mold in Dubai's high humidity is a common issue, especially after an AC leak. The first step is to address the moisture source; the mold will return if the area stays damp. For a small, contained area like a closet ceiling, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces like drywall.

However, given the description of it spreading from a past leak, the moisture may have penetrated deeper into the ceiling material than is visible. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run year-round and create constant condensation, hidden mold growth inside walls or ceilings is a significant risk. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside cavities.

For confirmed black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum), remediation should be handled by a certified company. They follow protocols to contain the spores, remove contaminated materials safely, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it's done thoroughly. After removal, the company should provide verification, often through third-party post-remediation testing, to confirm the space is safe. This is the most reliable approach for peace of mind and your family's health.
