How to remove black mold in shower corner and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been really humid lately and I think the ventilation isn't great in there. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it coming back?

Black mold in shower corners is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. For a small patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear gloves and a mask for protection. Use a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of one part bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the area, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly.

Preventing its return is the real challenge here. The root cause is excess moisture and poor ventilation. After every shower, run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes to remove humid air. If your fan is weak or non-functional, this is your primary issue. Wiping down wet walls and squeegeeing the shower can also help. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional assess your bathroom's ventilation; upgrading to a higher-capacity exhaust fan is often necessary in Dubai villas.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the growth is likely behind the tiles or in the ceiling void. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the full extent of the problem and the source of the moisture, as surface cleaning alone will not be sufficient.
