How to remove black mold in shower corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been super humid lately and the bathroom ventilation isn't great. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it coming back?

Black mold in shower corners is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For a small patch, you can clean it yourself safely.
Wear a mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Rinse with water and dry the area completely with a towel. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not kill the mold roots, allowing it to return faster. To prevent it from coming back, you must address the moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If ventilation is poor, consider a small dehumidifier. Wipe down wet walls and ceilings after use. The mold will likely return if the underlying humidity issue isn't resolved. For a recurring or large patch (over one square foot), or if you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if moisture is trapped within the wall and perform air quality tests to determine the spore count and species, which is important for assessing risk. In many Marina apartments, the problem is chronic high ambient humidity combined with insufficient airflow. |
