How to remove black mold in UAE villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It started after the heavy humidity last week, and the AC is constantly running. What’s the best way to deal with this in a UAE villa, and should I call a professional company or try to handle it myself first?

For a small patch (under one square foot) you can attempt to clean it yourself. The key is identifying and stopping the moisture source first. In a closet, this is often condensation from the cold AC duct in the ceiling or a lack of air circulation. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, but always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore exposure.

Given Dubai's high humidity and that the mold is spreading, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The constant AC use creates a perfect environment for hidden growth inside the ductwork or ceiling void that you cannot see. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface stain, not the root cause or potential health risks from airborne spores.

A proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing the contaminated material if it’s porous, like drywall or insulation. They will also identify the exact moisture issue—often inadequate insulation on cold AC ducts—to prevent immediate recurrence. In many UAE villas, this requires a diagnosis of the AC system itself. Companies with their own microbiology lab can test to identify the mold type and verify the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing, which is the only way to be certain it's truly resolved.
