How to remove black mold in UAE villa wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe on the ground floor. It's been so humid lately that even with the AC on, our clothes feel slightly damp. What's the best way to completely remove this ourselves and are there any specific dehumidifiers or preventive treatments you'd recommend for our UAE climate to stop it from coming back?

The damp clothes feeling is a classic sign of high humidity, which is the core issue here. For a patch smaller than a square meter, you can handle removal yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Ensure the area is well-ventilated during and after cleaning.

Complete removal requires addressing the source. In a ground-floor Dubai villa wardrobe, this is almost certainly condensation from the AC system's cold air meeting the high outdoor humidity, creating a damp microclimate. Check if the wardrobe's external wall is an exterior wall; these can sweat. Ensure the AC vent is not directly blowing cold air into the enclosed space and that the room's door is left open occasionally to allow for air circulation.

For prevention, a desiccant dehumidifier is far more effective than a refrigerant model in the UAE's climate, as it performs better in the high humidity and high temperatures typical here. Place one inside the wardrobe, especially during the more humid months. Also, avoid overpacking clothes to allow air to move freely.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden moisture sources within the wall or from the AC system itself, which is a common issue in villas. A proper assessment can determine if the AC drip line is blocked or if insulation is missing, problems that DIY cannot fix.
