How to remove black mold in wardrobe and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's on the exterior wall and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped there, especially after the recent humid weather. What's the best way to clean this safely and what can I do, like a dehumidifier or better ventilation, to make sure it doesn't come back?

The black mold you've described in your Jumeirah villa is a common issue in Dubai, primarily caused by the high ambient humidity interacting with cold surfaces, a phenomenon known as condensation. This is especially prevalent on exterior walls where temperature differentials are highest due to year-round AC use.

For safe removal of a small patch, personal protection is non-negotiable. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles. Isolate the area by closing the wardrobe doors and sealing the bottom gap with a towel. Do not attempt to dry brush the mold, as this will aerosolize spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a dilute solution of a proprietary antifungal cleaner or a 10% white vinegar solution to suppress spore dispersal. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths, placing all waste in a sealed plastic bag immediately.

However, surface cleaning is only a temporary fix. The underlying cause is excess moisture. In the UAE's climate, a dehumidifier is an essential tool for controlling humidity levels within the recommended 30-50% range. Crucially, you must improve air circulation behind the wardrobe. Leaving a small gap between the furniture and the wall can be effective. For a more permanent solution, investigate if the exterior wall has any hidden cracks or compromised waterproofing that may be allowing moisture ingress, which is a common issue with villas.

For any mold covering an area larger than one square meter, or if it recurs after cleaning, a professional inspection is mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines to assess the root cause and potential hidden growth. In such cases, I strongly recommend contacting our certified team at Saniservice. We conduct comprehensive moisture mapping and indoor air quality assessments to provide a definitive remediation plan.
