How to remove black mold in wardrobe corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, and should we be worried about our health?

Black spots in a wardrobe corner are a common issue in Dubai villas, especially during humid months. This is likely mould growth fueled by condensation from your AC and the high ambient humidity. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source. Check if your AC vent is directly blowing cold air onto that wall or corner, as the temperature difference between the cold surface and warm, humid air causes condensation. Adjusting the vent direction can often help.

For a small, localized area, you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask (N95 is best) and gloves. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. For persistent mould, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective, but test on a small area first to ensure it doesn't damage the paint or finish. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning using a fan or dehumidifier.

However, if the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated deep into the drywall or wardrobe backing, or if you have residents with asthma, allergies, or immune conditions, a DIY approach is not recommended. Disturbing larger colonies can spread spores. The most effective long-term solution requires a professional inspection to pinpoint the exact moisture source, which could be a small leak or inadequate insulation. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mould species, which is important for assessing health risks and ensuring the remediation protocol is correct. In many cases, the underlying cause is a need for improved ventilation or AC servicing to manage the humidity that is pervasive in the UAE climate.
