How to remove black mold on bedroom wall in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten much worse. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

The black spots spreading behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mould, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. The wardrobe traps moisture against the wall, creating an ideal environment for growth.

For a small, isolated area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe to expose the entire affected area. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for porous surfaces) and scrub the mould off. Allow the area to dry completely. However, simply cleaning the surface often fails because mould hyphae can penetrate porous materials like drywall and paint.

Given the description that it's "spreading" and "gotten much worse," the infestation is likely more established than it appears. Professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source—often inadequate insulation or a minor leak in the external wall—and use moisture meters to determine if the wall itself is damp inside. Effective remediation requires addressing this root cause to prevent immediate recurrence.

In serious cases, the affected section of drywall may need to be removed and replaced after the cavity is treated and dried. A professional service with its own microbiology lab can also test to identify the mould species, which informs the correct remediation protocol and confirms the cleanup was successful through post-remediation verification. For a persistent problem on an exterior wall, this is the most reliable long-term solution.
