How to remove closet mold and fix damp wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started smelling really damp, and today I found a patch of black spots on my winter jackets and the back wall. This started right after the heavy dew we had last week, and the room feels more humid than the rest of the apartment. I’m worried it’s spreading to my clothes. What’s the best way to clean this myself, and should I get my building’s maintenance involved for the wall?

That damp smell and black spots are classic signs of condensation-related mold, a very common issue here due to our high humidity levels, especially after heavy dew. The wall is likely cold from the air conditioning, and warm, moist air condenses on it, creating the perfect environment for mold.
For your clothes, take them outside to brush off the visible spores. For washable fabrics like jackets, a hot wash with a detergent containing oxygen bleach can effectively remove the mold and its stains. Dry them completely in the sun, if possible, before returning them to the closet. For the wall surface, wear a mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (one part vinegar to one part water) or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root structure, and the mold will often return. After cleaning, let the area dry thoroughly. However, this only addresses the surface issue. The mold inside the wall is likely more extensive. The core problem is the temperature differential and moisture accumulation within the wall cavity. This is where building maintenance should be involved. In Dubai, landlords and building management are generally responsible for the structural integrity of the external walls, including addressing insulation or sealing issues that lead to chronic dampness. Request that they inspect the external wall sealants and the insulation. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can also help significantly. For confirmation the issue is fully resolved and to identify the mold type, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab is the most definitive approach. |
