How to remove closet mold and prevent damage in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black speckles on the leather handbags and shoes I stored in there. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago, and even after wiping everything down, the musty smell is still really strong inside the closet. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help this area. What's the best way to get rid of this for good and prevent my clothes from getting ruined?

The black speckles and persistent musty smell indicate active mold growth, likely due to Dubai's high humidity and a potential lack of airflow in the enclosed closet space. Running the AC generally lowers humidity, but closets are often dead zones where cold air doesn't circulate, allowing condensation and mold to form on leather and other materials.
First, remove all affected items and clean them outdoors with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather-safe antimicrobial cleaner. For the closet itself, scrub all interior surfaces with a mixture of detergent and warm water. A HEPA vacuum can help remove spores from shelves and corners. Never use bleach, as it only lightens the color and doesn't kill the root structure. To prevent recurrence, you must control the moisture source. Ensure the closet is not on an exterior wall where condensation occurs. Leave the closet doors open for several hours daily to allow air from the AC to circulate. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help maintain low humidity levels. For valuable items, consider professional mold remediation cleaning to prevent permanent damage. If the musty smell persists after cleaning, the mold may have penetrated deeper into the walls or the problem could be originating from a hidden leak or an AC unit drip pan issue. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to identify the core problem. |
