How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. We keep the AC running constantly but I guess the lack of air circulation in the closed space is causing it. What's the best way to completely clean my belongings and what can I do to stop the humidity from building up in there again?

The mold growth you're observing in your master bedroom closet is a classic symptom of Dubai's high ambient humidity interacting with a confined, poorly ventilated space. Even with constant AC, interior closets can become microclimates where condensation forms, especially on leather goods which can absorb moisture. The first step is to address the contaminated items. For leather shoes and bags, use a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water. Apply it sparingly with a soft, clean cloth to the affected areas, then allow the items to air dry completely in a well-ventilated, dry space—never in direct sunlight as it can damage the leather. For non-porous surfaces inside the closet, a solution of detergent and water can be used for cleaning.
To prevent recurrence, you must tackle the humidity. Install a battery-operated humidity meter (hygrometer) inside the closet; your target is to keep relative humidity below 60%. For closets on interior walls, a small, discreet dehumidifier unit or reusable moisture absorber bags are highly effective. Ensure there is a small air gap between the wall and your stored items. Most critically, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically and consider having a professional HVAC technician assess if a dedicated vent can be installed to direct a small amount of conditioned air into the space. If the mold growth is extensive, has a persistent musty odor, or returns after cleaning, the issue may be more serious, requiring professional assessment. Mold can indicate hidden condensation within the wall or other underlying problems.
