How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity damage?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom closet, which we barely use, has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes stored inside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room always feels damp. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that one enclosed space. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good and what can I do to stop the humidity from causing it again?

The black spots on your leather items are likely active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai's enclosed spaces due to our extreme humidity. The first step is to address both the items and the environment to prevent it from returning.
For the mold removal, take the affected bags and shoes outside to a well-ventilated area to prevent spreading spores. Wipe them down thoroughly with a soft cloth dampened with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water or a leather-safe disinfectant. Allow them to air dry completely in the sun, if possible, before bringing them back inside. For the closet itself, clean all interior surfaces with the same vinegar solution or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during this process. The core issue is the trapped humidity in that unused room. Running the AC for the whole villa may not be enough for a closed-off, unoccupied space. The constant cooling can actually create more condensation in enclosed areas if air isn't circulating. Start by leaving the closet doors and the bedroom door open for several hours a day to promote airflow. A small, portable dehumidifier placed inside that room can make a significant, immediate difference. For a more permanent solution, consider having your AC system inspected; an imbalance in pressure or a blocked duct could be preventing that room from being properly conditioned. In many cases, the mold you see is only the surface growth. If the musty odor persists or you suspect the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the closet's backing board, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing is recommended to assess the full extent. This is the most effective way to identify and solve the hidden humidity source for good. |
